YouTube Karaoke
A simple Chrome plug-in that attempts to remove the vocals from YouTube videos.

Download: Version 2.0 – Chrome Web Store

This plug-in is only available on the Chrome Web Store

Karaoke Mode for YouTube™ attempts to remove the vocals from the video.

Simply click the Karaoke button that appears in the YouTube player, as illustrated with a microphone.

Videos that are forced to play in Flash, such as VEVO, will not work with the plugin.

This technique does not work with some songs.

Now with lyrics!

Sorry, this page just popped up while I was in Google Chrome Browser in another tab. It looked interesting as I am a singer. I installed Karaoke Mode For YouTube and also the Karaoke PlayList to go along with it. I was already signed into YouTube and activated the Karaoke Mode clicked “Frozen” in the playlist and I still hear singing/vocals. And I don’t see any lyrics on the side as shown in pic above. Call me dumb but what’s wrong? How do I make it work?

      Hi there,

It would have popped up as you installed it at some point, and yesterday I made an update for it.

The plugin attempts to remove the vocals. It won’t be able to do a perfect job all the time, but it works well on lots of songs. The lyrics are displayed when they can be found, if not a little message will appears saying so. Actually it can’t find the lyrics for “Frozen”.

You can try it with any video, and then try clicking the Karaoke Mode button to hear the difference before and after it attempts to remove the vocals:

Let me know if it works!

How do you remove this from Chrome?

  • David

Hello, can you make this plug-in for any HTML audio? It would be great with Google Play Music and other services. Also, can you simulate an “Acappella” mode that only plays the in-phase audio? It is not perfect but it can be interesting to hear. Adobe Audition supports this.

    • http://www.richard-stanton.com stanton119

Hi, that’s an interesting suggestion! I will definitely look in to this when I come around to update the plugin, it should be do-able. I am swamped with other work at the moment, so this may not be for a while though.
As for the a cappella mode, Most of the stuff that would remain would be anything that is panned to the centre, so this would generally be vocals, snare, bass drum and bass.

Thanks for all your great contributions! The acapella is pretty cool even if it is not very functional. If you demo Adobe Audition you’ll see some pretty cool stuff they do to isolate instrumentals and/or vocals.

It would be great if it’s not confine to Chrome. Does it work with Firefox?

    • http://www.richard-stanton.com stanton119

Thanks for the feedback. I haven’t looked into Firefox before, I am not familiar with the extension frameworks for Firefox. I can consider it for the next major release though if its easy.

What is the average time to convert a video?

    • http://www.richard-stanton.com stanton119

It does it in real time. If you click the karaoke button it will switch on and off straight away. If you try toggling it a couple of times, you should be able to hear the difference.

Hey, I just downloaded it, and the icon hasn’t popped up. I’m using a chromebook, and just restarted the computer. Anything I can do?

    • http://www.richard-stanton.com stanton119

Hi, maybe it’s not enabled? If you go to the settings->extensions and see if its checked or not.

      • Kellen Joel

        OK, found it! Thanks!

      • Kellen Joel

OK, for some reason, the button doesn’t work for any of the songs, even the ones that supposedly work for karaoke mode
